Language related - Linguistics
- The Linguist List:
linguistlist.org/
(This is the most comprehensive linguistics resource on the Web. A must, for anyone interested.)
- The Human Languages Page:
www.june29.com/HLP/
(The Human-Languages Page is likewise a very comprehensive catalog of language-related Internet resources. This page offers than 1800 links, covering all sorts of languge-related topics, including online language lessons, translating dictionaries, native literature, translation services, software, language schools, and information on a large number of languages.)
- Ask-A-Linguist:
linguistlist.org/~ask-ling/
(This service constitutes an alternative to the LGS Language FAQ, offered on this Site. Ask-a-linguist is a service provided by The LINGUIST List, and maintained on a volunteer basis. Anyone interested in language or linguistics can ask a question and get the response of a panel of professional linguists.)
- An Introduction to Linguistics:
www.geocities.com/CollegePark/3920/index.html
(This Site offers linguistics basics, plenty of links, including links to Universities where linguistics is taught. Special feature: the IPA chart--IPA=International Phonetics Association.)
- SIL--Summer Institute of Linguistics:
www.sil.org
(This Site is specially interesting to phoneticists, and to those dealing with anthropological linguistics. Special feature: the SIL Web Site offers software useful to linguists, especially phoneticists (such as Win-compatible software for phonetic transcriptions). Most of it is free of charge. In addition, at the SIL Web Site, one can find other kinds of software, unrelated to linguistics and, likewise, most of it freeware.)
Language related - General Semantics
- The International Society For General Semantics' Home Page:
www.generalsemantics.org/ (Although obviously dealing with language use quite centrally, General Semantics, or simply gs (in small case letters), should not be mistaken as holding strict coherence with traditional linguistics. For a brief reference, it would be safer to present gs as a sort of "humanistic linguistics centered on communication." The ISGS indicates as an underlying goal for gs, that of yielding better understanding through more precise use of language. If you are interested in effective communication (including communication with yourself) and gratifying human relations, it is likely you will be very pleased to give gs a good try--if you haven't yet...)
NOTE - Pls.CLICK HERE!
- The Institute of General Semantics' Home Page:
www.general-semantics.org/ (Please note that the above URL differs from the previous one in that there is a dash between the two words. Likewise, the Institute of General Semantics is an organization which, though holding a common focus on gs, is not equivalent to the ISGS. The IGS makes the following reference to gs on its opening page: it's a revolution in human evaluating, mentioning further that gs should not be mistaken for semantics, nor be mistaken for a system which, though dealing also with words, would find its boundaries at word level: it's an approach to living.)
- General Semantics:
www.newciv.org/ISSS_Primer/seminaro.html (This is another link from Flemming's New Civilization Network site that must be mentioned, considering the context of the present list, in special. On this home page you find the article General-Semantics a Critical and Meta-Critical System, written by Milton Dawes for The First International Electronic Seminar on Wholeness. This was seminar organized by a Special Integration Group (SIG) of the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS) originally SGSR, Society for General Systems Research.)
- Non-Aristotelian, or a multivalued logic:
www.sundial.net/~rogerr/nulla.htm (This is Roger Russell's A. E. Van Vogt Page, on which this fundamental aspect of General Semantics is reviewed. As you may not be familiar with Korzybski's terminology, it is worth explaining that Aristotelian logic constitutes a two-fold logic (such as black and white as values--no possible or recognizable value in between or beyond). One of General Semantics supporting pillars, in turn, is the exercise of multivalued, thus non-Aristotelian, logical processes. In case you are not familiar with gs, here are Korzybski's most famous words. They may ring a bell: the map is not the territory.)
- Max's TransMillennium, Inc.:
www.transmillennium.net
(Max's Transmillennium site is to be experienced, rather than described--an attempt toward an objective description would result unfair. Offering non-fragmentary, humanistic, creative approaches to a vast scope that ranges from computers to Humans and much that goes in between and beyond, Max's site offers every chance of a highly enjoyable and enriching visit. Max has a personal page, in addition. Max, it should be added, is also a general semanticist.)
- Flemming's New Civilization Network:
www.newciv.org
(Flemming offers the following reference, on the opening page: The New Civilization Network (NCN) is a global network of people visualizing a better world and working on building it. A world of increased quality of life, freedom, fun and inspiration for all. A world where the needs of all of humanity are met. In addition to its enriching content, the New Civilization Network offers a very large number of attractive links. Among these, one must be mentioned here: Flemming's World Transformation page. AFAIK, Flemming's links to general semantics are via Max, above, with whose home page Flemming's bears a link of cooperation.)

(Robin Allott's Web Site is a most interesting one, dealing with Language and Evolution, including Allott's fascinating Motor Theory of Language. Robin Allott's intellectual production is listed and available on her Site. There are, in addition, some very interesting illustrations on this Web Site--even someone foreign to the language area will most likely enjoy seeing them.)
